Treating Nail Fungus – Tips and Tricks

Tips and Tricks for Maximum Success in getting rid of Nail Fungus!

Don’t take a bath (yet)

For best effect, FixaFungus recommends trimming the nails and filing them as indicated below prior to taking a bath or shower.

Trim your nails

Before treatment, especially the first one, be sure to trim the infected nail as short as possible without cutting into the cuticle. It is important not to cut too deep, especially on the sides, as it can cause an ingrown toenail, which can further complicate getting rid of the nail fungus. During treatment, it is important to trim the finger or toenails at least weekly, in order to get rid of the infected nail as fast as possible and prevent infection of the new nail growth.

File down the top of the nail

It turns out, when treating nail fungus, just “scratching the surface” can be an important part of success. Before the first treatment, use a nail file or emery board to “sand down” the infected nail. Performed properly, this accomplishes two things. First, it removes any type of nail polish or laquer that may already be on the nail and that would would be an additional barrier to any antifungal drug applied. Secondly, by abrading or “roughing up” up the topmost layer of the nail plate, the penetration of any other drugs into the nail plate to the nail bed below are enhanced.
FixaFungus ToeNail Fungus Treatment includes an emery board for this purpose. Start by making sure the coarsest side of the emery board or nail file is used and move the flat side firmly back and forth across the top of the nail. Where there is subungual hyperkeratosis (thick yellow flaky stuff pushing up under the nails) and nails have become strongly disfigured and/or the layers underneath are very thick, it is advisable to file off a significant portion of the extra thickness. Where the nails are merely white or discolored, filing can be simply enough to score the most external layer of the nail plate.

Hop in the tub

If you plan to take a bath or shower around this time, this is the time to do so. Soaking the fingernails or toenails in water makes them expand and become hydrophilic, which simply means that as the nail soaks up water, like a sponge, it becomes soft and is less able to block out contaminates like dermatophyte fungi or compounds like antifungal drugs. That is why it is easier to get toenail fungus in the first place in damp moist places, like gym showers or sweaty socks.

Apply a Penetration Enhancer

Even after eliminating any excess nail area, any polish or lacquer and to have eliminated the top layer, the nail plate is still a formidable obstacle to most drugs. In order to combat this, a penetration enhancer should be applied. While DMSO is the great for assisting drug penetration into the skin, the keratins of the nail are not like those of the skin and so other ways must be found for ungual (under the nail) delivery.
To our knowledge, there are only two that are widely available for this purpose. First, there is urea, which is a chaotropic compound found in urine and used primarily in fertilizer. It is normally applied in creams and lotions at the 40-50% concentration needed to have some effect on the nails. There have been complaints of side effects when applying to the skin and it is by prescription only, so good luck getting it without seeing a doctor first.
FixaFungus uses a pre-treatment of Keratrate, a penetration enhancer made of a keratinase enzyme and an activator solution, a combination that has been scientifically proven to soften the nail plate and make it more permeable for drug delivery. Just prior to first use, the activator solution should be poured into the applicator vial according to instructions, and then shaken to mix thoroughly. Using the brush on the applicator, apply the Keratrate solution uniformly on the nail, while avoiding the surrounding skin. Leave it on for about 5-10 minutes before applying the antifungal. We recommend application 3x per day for the first 3 days and then once daily after that for maximum success.

Apply the Fungicide

Now that the nail plate has been prepared, a fungicidal compound like FixaFungus’s Fungicillin must be applied in order to kill the fungal infection lurking in the soft tissues of the nail. Use the applicator according to directions to apply to the nail and to the skin directly surrounding the nail. The fungicide should be applied on the surrounding skin in order to ensure that the fungus does not re-infect the nail from still infected adjacent skin. Because Fungicillin is oil based, it does not evaporate but soaks into the skin and the nail. This is important for treatment because it helps keep the nail “softer” and more permeable for the fungicidal compounds as well as giving those compounds more time to work.

No more baths (at least for a bit)

While shoes and socks can be worn after the treatment soaks in (perhaps 10-15 minutes), it is highly recommended not to wash or soak the nail in water for at least 6 hours afterward in order to give the treatment time. That is why FixaFungus recommends that the best time to apply treatment is right after a shower before bedtime or right after a morning shower.

Mind your socks

Make sure you change your socks or hose and ideally even your shoes daily. Some basic practices of hygiene like making sure socks or hose are washed before wearing again is even more important when trying to eliminate toenail fungus. By switching up the shoes that you wear from day to day, you not only help keep your feet dry and keep the fungus from spreading, your shoes will last longer because they have a chance to air out.

Lay off the nail polish

While it may be aesthetically desirable for women who have nail fungus to cover up the nails, including the infected ones, with a clear or colored nail polish, it will mean you will have the ugly fungus that much longer. Polish and lacquers hinder the antifungals from reaching the infected areas and if one is used, the nail must be roughened again before applying treatment. FixaFungus recommends holding off on wearing polish on any infected nails till after they have grown out clear.

By following the above practices while using a great product like our ToeNail Fungus Treatment, you give yourself the strongest chance to get rid of that nasty nail fungus once and for all!
